Do I Need a Referral?
Yes. All new patients need a medical referral before booking an appointment at Latitude. This helps ensure your child’s care team is connected and that important information is shared between your family doctor or nurse practitioner and the dermatological care provider.
How to Request a Referral to Latitude Pediatric Dermatology
While getting a referral to a specialist might feel like a significant barrier, this process is actually a lot easier than most parents expect.
Step 1: Talk to Your Primary Care Provider
Start by booking an appointment with your family doctor, pediatrician, or nurse practitioner and let them know you would like a referral to Latitude Pediatric Dermatology (Dr. Don McConnell) for your child’s skin concern. If your normal primary care provider is not available, you can also request a referral from a walk-in physician.
At Latitude Pediatric Dermatology, we are happy to see any and all kids’ skin concerns–even “minor” issues like acne or mild eczema. If your primary care provider is hesitant to provide a referral, highlight the social, emotional, and mental impact this skin condition is having on your child.
Step 2: We Receive Your Referral
Your healthcare provider will fax the referral directly to Latitude Pediatric Dermatology. Our team reviews referrals as they come in and identifies any urgent cases that need to be seen sooner.

What to Expect From Your First Appointment
Once you’ve booked your first appointment with us, here’s what you need to know:
Getting Here
Latitude Pediatric Dermatology is located at Suite #202, 10430 61 Ave NW, in the Allendale Professional Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Our office is easily accessible via public transit, and there is ample free parking available. Get directions to our clinic.
We recommend arriving at our office 5 to 10 minutes before your first appointment so you have time to park, find the clinic, and complete any remaining paperwork before you’re called in.
What to Bring
We recommend bringing a few key items to your child’s appointment with us:
- Your child’s Alberta Health Care card.
- A written list of all creams, medications, or other skin products your child is using or has used in the past.
- Other relevant health information, including allergies or other medications.
If you’d like, you can also bring a short list of questions you and your child would like to discuss, or recent photographs of the skin issue. Your comfort is our priority–we’ll do our best to ensure we address all your concerns during your appointment.
Your First Appointment
Most first visits at Latitude Pediatric Dermatology are around 30 minutes long. You’ll meet Dr. McConnell, who will look at your child’s skin, ask a few questions, and walk you through what he’s seeing. From there, we’ll discuss treatment options, additional tips, and building a care plan customized to your child.
Our team works hard to run on time and respect your schedule, while still making sure you feel heard and supported before you leave. You’ll go home knowing what the next steps are, what to do at home, and who to contact if questions come up between visits.
