Acne

Is your child struggling with acne? Latitude Pediatric Dermatology can help. Our lead physician, Dr. Don McConnell, has several years of experience providing comprehensive acne treatment for kids and teenagers in Edmonton and the surrounding areas.

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog your pores. It most commonly appears on the face, chest, shoulders, and back, and can range from mild blackheads and whiteheads to more inflamed, painful cystic breakouts.

Acne is most common during the teenage years, when hormonal changes cause the skin to produce more oil. However, it can develop in children as young as 7 or 8, and many young adults continue to experience it well into their twenties.

What are the Symptoms of Acne?

Acne can look different from person to person, and the symptoms your child experiences will depend on the type and severity of their condition. Common signs of acne include:

At Latitude Pediatric Dermatology, we use a variety of Health Canada-approved eczema treatments to create a unique and personalized care plan for your child, which could include:

Blackheads

Open, clogged pores that appear dark at the surface.

Whiteheads

Closed, clogged pores that appear as small white bumps.

Cysts

Deep, painful lumps located deep under the skin.

Acne most often develops on the face, but it is also common on the neck, chest, back, and shoulders. If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms and over-the-counter treatments have not helped, it may be time to speak with a specialist.

  • Topical treatments, including retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical antibiotics
  • Oral medications, including oral antibiotics or hormone-based therapies, where appropriate
  • Isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane) for more severe or persistent cases
  • Skincare routine guidance tailored to your child’s skin type and lifestyle
  • Ongoing monitoring and plan adjustments as the condition changes over time

Whatever your child’s plan looks like, we’ll make sure you both know exactly what each treatment is, why it’s recommended, and how to use it.
